July 2009

Sunday June 21st marked a memorable event for the Huntsville Suzuki School – an afternoon concert at Jerrett’s Hwy 60 barn.  And what a concert it was!

Soloists Ashley Hill and Amanda Penner performed the hauntingly beautiful Handel Halvorsen for violin and viola; cellist Sarah Jane Johnson performed several movements from the Bach suites as well as the contemporary Julie-O by Mark Summers which was accompanied by modern dance artist Meredith Thompson and friend; drummer Glenn Kaye led a stirring Kenyan call and response and the Huntsville Suzuki Youth orchestra, led by Linda Drennan, performed a number of selections from both the Baroque and modern eras.

The highlight, however, was the premiere performance of a 3 movement work written expressly for the group by renowned Canadian composer, Nancy Telfer.  Titled Water, Rock, Trees the piece evoked powerful images of Muskoka while celebrating music and youth.  Telfer was in attendance at the performance.

A sold out performance, the afternoon culminated with refreshments courtesy of the Butchers Daughters deli, Huntsville.

REGISTRATION

Registration for violin and cello lessons in September is due May 25th.

The Board has made significant cuts to the 2009-2010 budget in order to maintain our home at the Train Station for another year and to ensure there will be NO increase in the school fee this year.  The convenience of our in town location for lessons, groups and recitals is unsurpassed.  The teaching fee, which has not been increased since 2007, will be increased by approx. 3%.

A word about group lessons.  As you know groups are an integral part of our program.  Learning to play a stringed instrument also means learning about ensemble, cooperation, and the joy of performing for others.  Groups also provide valuable teaching hours.  The schedule of 3 sets of 5 groups has proven that it provides a better learning environment than bi monthly lessons.  Continuity and retention are enhanced; skills develop faster.  As a Suzuki teacher I sometimes feel I am swimming upstream in our competitive society.  While there is nothing wrong with competition, I have chosen to work within a philosophy which teaches discipline and commitment in a non-competitive environment – marks, grades, medals, winning and losing are not part of this experience.  None-the-less, team effort is!  How can we instill in our children that the importance of commitment and discipline and being part of the ‘team’ goes beyond extrinsic rewards.  Their participation is just as important even if the ‘game’ is not about winning and losing.  This is surely one of life’s valuable lessons and what better place to be found than in music.

We set our group schedules in June.  It is impossible to hold both group lessons and private lessons after school on week days with our limited teaching staff – there just are not enough hours in the day.  Groups are not optional and, although I do understand conflicts sometimes arise, sometimes as parents we have to say ‘no’.  Please mark these dates on your calendar – there are only 15 small group dates throughout the year – and many thanks to all of you in supporting our scheduling trials!

HANDBOOK

All parents will receive a handbook with their schedule this year outlining the various components of the Suzuki School, including our mission, structure and various regulations.  A few additions this year will be the application of a $50 late fee for school and orchestra fees (unless alternate arrangements have been made with the volunteer treasurer), a $20 fee for all nsf cheques (as we are charged for them as well as you), and the School Fee has been divided into a $50 registration fee (payable in June) with the remainder $200 portion to be paid when lessons begin. This is to alleviate some of the burden in September payments and holds a place for your child in the Suzuki School over the summer.
